Windows 10 End of Support – What should organizations do now?

As of today, October 14, 2025, Microsoft officially ends all support for Windows 10 Enterprise, Pro, and Education editions.
This means no more security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. For organizations that haven’t yet migrated to Windows 11, it’s now critical to act swiftly and strategically – both from a security and cost perspective.

What does this mean for organizations?

När Windows 10 Enterprise, Pro och Education nu når ”end of support” innebär det:

  • No more security updates from Microsoft
  • No technical support through standard channels
  • Reduced compatibility with new applications and platforms

This increases the risk of:

  • Higher maintenance costs and potential service disruptions
  • Cyberattacks and breaches in critical systems
  • Compliance issues and lack of GDPR adherence

What needs to be done now?

Organizations that have not yet completed their migration should immediately:

  • Inventory all remaining Windows 10 devices
  • Assess Windows 11 compatibility
  • Complete the migration to Windows 11
  • Evaluate the need for Extended Security Updates (ESU)

Technical Requirements for Windows 11 Upgrade

To upgrade directly to Windows 11 via in-place upgrade, a device must be running:

  • Windows 10 version 21H2 or late
  • If the device is running an earlier version than 21H2
It must first be updated to version 21H2 (or newer) before a direct upgrade to Windows 11 can be performed without reinstallation.

There is no need to move to version 22H2 first if the goal is to upgrade directly to Windows 11 – as long as the device is already on 21H2 or later.

Note: Support for Windows 10 version 21H2 (Enterprise/Education) ended on June 11, 2024.

Good to know:

Windows 10 och 11 delar samma kodbas (Windows NT 10.x), vilket innebär:

  • Near 100% compatibility with drivers and business applications
  • Seamless management via Intune, GPO and Endpoint Manager
  • Low technical risk during migration

Extended Security Updates (ESU), a temporary safety net

Microsoft offersExtended Security Updates (ESU) for organizations in the private, public, and education sectors that need more time to complete their migration. ESU includes only critical security updates – no new features.

YearPeriodCost per device (USD)*
12025–2026approx. $61
22026–2027approx. $122
32027–2028approx. $244

* Applies to Windows 10 Enterprise, Education and Pro in professional environments. Prices may vary depending on licensing model and volume agreements.

Important: The cost doubles each year. ESU should be seen as a temporary bridge, not a long-term strategy.
